Top 10 photos of 2022

In my first full year as a freelance photographer, and owner of From the Hart Pictures, I was able to capture my first wedding, as well as delve into action sports portraits. Yet, I was still able to be at the state’s biggest high school sporting events, freelancing for many of my former newspapers. It was the perfect year to be creative and my biggest year of growth as a photographer. Here are 10 of my favorite images from 2022:

A Graham-Kapowsin player focuses on catching a bobbled pass in a football game in Spanaway, Washington.

Football is often hard to capture athlete’s eyes, but this image shows how focused the Graham-Kapowsin receiver was to bring this ball down after bobbling the initial pass.

A Bellevue goalkeeper makes a last-minute save to secure a 1-0 victory in the 3A Girls Soccer State Championships in Sumner, Washington.

As a former goalkeeper myself, this 1-on-1 save from a Bellevue goalie in the 3A State Championship’s dying minutes wow’d me.

A Prairie wrestler gestures toward his fans as the coach pumps his fist in triumph after winning a state title in Tacoma, Washington.

Mat Classic, Washington state’s state championship wrestling event in Tacoma, always provides chances to capture every human emotion. In this frame, you see the humility of Prairie’s Alex Ford and the exuberance of coach Rob Smith after the wrestle triumphed for a state title.

A Pacific Northwest bride hugs her father during a wedding at Pelican Brewing in Pacific City, Oregon.

I love all the little moments of a wedding day. This tender embrace of a bride and her father lasted just a couple seconds but was one of my favorite moments of the reception. The black-and-white enhances the texture of the bride’s hair and the lines of the father’s hands.

A Lincoln defensive back and Camas receiver wrestle for a potential fourth-quarter touchdown pass in Tacoma, Washington.

It’s so rare to shoot football in the daylight, so I had to go wide and get Tacoma’s historic Lincoln High School in the background of this consequential play in the fourth quarter of a game between Lincoln and Camas.

A groom smiles as he prepares to walk down the aisle at a wedding at Pelican Brewing in Pacific City, Oregon.

I like using black-and-white for the small, fleeting moments of a wedding day because I think it adds something to the image. In this frame, it highlights the nervous smile of a groom as he prepares to walk down the aisle.

A Kelso High School senior clears a hurdle for a senior portrait at Kelso High School in Washington

When the mother of this athlete requested action track portraits, I jumped at the opportunity. This remains one of my favorite senior portrait shoots, as we got creative with all sorts of ideas to highlight the athleticism of this heptathlon competitor.

A Napavine player gestures toward the crowd after winning the 2B State Championship in Tacoma, Wash.

This photo tells quite a story. The solo finger in front of a state banner, the cheerleader blocks with “senior” emblazoned, the applauding crowd and that overjoyed smile of the player leaves no doubt who won this championship.

A senior poses for a portrait at Gasworks Park in Seattle

Teenagers are often nervous for senior portraits. It’s usually their first experience with a professional photoshoot and there’s this stranger asking you to stand in different places and smile. The quiet confidence of this senior at Gasworks Park in Seattle showcases the rapport we built during the session that day.

Tobias Merriweather of Vancouver's Union High School lets out a roar after winning the 100-meter dash at the State Championships in Tacoma, Washington

This is possibly my favorite sports photo I’ve ever taken. The athlete here is Tobias Merriweather, an elite football recruit, who was battling injuries entering the state championships. As he crosses the finish line in first place of the 200-meter dash, he let out this roar of triumph. I love the emotion of this image.
